General educational information. This article has not been reviewed by a named clinician and does not replace an individual medical assessment or treatment plan.
A quote for “3,000 grafts” and an advertisement for “6,000 hairs” may sound like very different offers. Before comparing them, ask what each number counts. A graft can contain more than one hair, so the figures describe different things. Neither figure, by itself, tells you how natural or full a transplant will look.
Whether you are reviewing a local US estimate or considering treatment in Turkey or Yerevan, use the same starting point: a clear explanation of the units, the areas to be treated, and the medical reasons for the plan.

What is the difference between a hair and a graft?
The visible hair shaft is the strand you see above the skin. A follicle is the structure that produces a hair. A follicular unit is a small, naturally occurring grouping of follicles. A transplant graft is the piece of tissue moved during surgery; a follicular-unit graft commonly contains one to four hairs. This is why “grafts” and “hairs” should be recorded separately. [1]
If a quote uses “follicles,” ask the clinic exactly what it means. Have the written estimate specify whether the number refers to individual hairs or follicular-unit grafts, rather than assuming the words are interchangeable.
A simple counting example
Imagine an illustrative group of 100 grafts:
- 20 grafts contain one hair each: 20 hairs
- 50 grafts contain two hairs each: 100 hairs
- 30 grafts contain three hairs each: 90 hairs
The total is 100 grafts containing 210 hairs, or an average of 2.1 hairs per graft. This is a counting example, not a typical patient result or a recommended graft mix.
Likewise, 3,000 grafts would contain 6,000 hairs if the measured average were two hairs per graft. A different average changes that total. Avoid treating any advertised conversion as a fixed rule, or confusing the number placed with the number that will ultimately grow.
Why the same graft count can look different
Hair thickness, curl, color contrast with the scalp, and the size of the area being covered all influence the appearance of fullness. Two patients receiving the same number of grafts can therefore have different-looking results. A personalized plan needs to consider these features together. [2]
Placement matters too. The front edge of a hairline and the areas behind it have different design requirements. Surgeons select and distribute single-hair and multi-hair grafts according to those requirements. A larger total does not automatically produce a more natural hairline. [3]
Ask the clinician to show which zones the estimate covers. Does it prioritize the frontal hairline, the mid-scalp, the crown, or a combination? This makes two plans easier to compare than their headline totals alone.
Your donor area sets an important limit
Hair transplantation redistributes existing hair. It does not create an unlimited new supply. Healthy donor hair at the back and sides of the scalp is an important part of candidacy, and there are limits to the coverage surgery can achieve. [4]
Removing too many grafts can leave the donor area visibly sparse or scarred. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery warns about overharvesting associated with promises to take as many grafts as possible. [5] Ask how the proposed plan protects the appearance of the donor area and leaves options if your hair loss changes.
A scalp examination is essential to assessing suitability. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that some patients need additional investigation and that ongoing hair loss can continue after transplantation. Depending on the findings, medical treatment or waiting may be appropriate. [6]
Six details to request in a written quote
Use the following checklist to make estimates more comparable. It is a discussion aid, not a substitute for medical assessment.
- The counting unit. Is the proposal expressed in grafts or hairs? If both appear, how was the hair estimate calculated?
- The scope of treatment. Which scalp areas are included, and which are outside the proposed session?
- The status of the number. Is it a preliminary estimate or a plan based on an in-person examination? What happens if the clinician recommends fewer grafts?
- The people and procedure. Who is the responsible surgeon, what are their qualifications, and who performs each stage? Ask why the recommended method suits you.
- The complete price. Request the currency, included services, possible extra charges, payment schedule, and cancellation terms. Ask how a change in the agreed scope affects the cost.
- The record and follow-up. Ask what procedure summary you will receive, how the final graft count is documented, and who handles questions or complications afterward.
The NHS recommends asking about a surgeon’s experience, complications, choice of technique, and follow-up arrangements before proceeding. [7] Keep the answers alongside the estimate so that a lower headline price does not obscure a different treatment scope.
Comparing US, Turkey, and Armenia estimates
Compare named clinicians and written plans rather than assuming that a country or a package label establishes quality. For overseas treatment, add travel, accommodation, time away from work, and potential additional care to your planning worksheet. Ask explicitly which services are included.
The CDC advises medical travelers to discuss their plans with a healthcare professional at home, arrange for complications and follow-up, and obtain medical records in English for later care. [8] Confirm the recommended stay and return-travel plan with your treating clinician before booking. Do not assume that a short advertised procedure means you can immediately resume a normal vacation.
Questions patients often ask
Does a bigger graft number mean a better result?
No. A suitable plan balances the area to cover, the available donor supply, hair characteristics, and realistic goals. A useful comparison asks why the number was recommended and where the grafts would be placed. [3] [4]
Can photographs tell me exactly how many grafts I need?
Photographs can start a discussion, but they do not replace a thorough scalp examination or any tests a clinician considers necessary. Treat an estimate based only on photographs as preliminary. [6]
Does the graft count guarantee growth?
No. Hair transplantation has risks, including poor graft growth and noticeable scarring. The surgeon should explain the possible outcomes and how problems would be managed. [7]
Bring clearer questions to your consultation
United Hair Clinic is based in Yerevan, Armenia, and lists hair, beard, and eyebrow transplantation among its services. [Clinic information] If you are considering the clinic, bring this checklist to the discussion and ask for a written explanation of the proposed graft count, treatment areas, limitations, and total cost.
You can use the clinic’s contact page to ask about an assessment. Make the decision after you understand both the medical plan and the written terms.
